Practical information
First class: June 22. Last class: July 27.
The proposal
Together with Manu Paredes, we have created a great introduction for people who have never tried contact improvisation and are curious to give it a go. In 6 classes, you’ll go from zero to having a solid foundation: understanding what contact is, feeling comfortable sharing weight with another person, learning to fall and roll safely, and beginning to move fluidly in contact.
The goal is that, by the end of the course, you can come to the jams (unguided practice sessions) with enough tools to dance, enjoy yourself, and keep learning within the community.
This course is also for people who have tried contact before and would like to practise CI and explore its concepts through Manu’s personal approach and the importance he gives to play, grounding, trust, movement ergonomics, sensitivity, breathing, projection, imagination, the floor, and flexibility through tenderness and gentle movement.
What is Contact Improvisation?
Contact improvisation dance is the result of the dynamic evolution of several connected bodies playing with inertia, gravity, traction, pressure, balance, falling, rebound, momentum, and more, while maintaining qualities of gentleness, listening, synchronicity, and fluidity between them—without steps to memorise or fixed roles.
No previous dance experience, particular fitness level, or partner is required. Just comfortable clothes and a willingness to explore.
What you will learn
We will explore the fundamental elements of contact improvisation dance: euthony, connection and listening, points of contact (support, rolling, counterbalancing, sliding, and traction), our relationship with the floor (quadrupedal movement and low-level movement), the physical principles of inertia and suspension, the projection and direction of the limbs and their relationship to balance—as key to travelling through space—and imbalance as a driving force for movement. And finally, we’ll spend some time exploring the kinetic importance of the head, the direction of gaze and peripheral vision.
